- Dec 03, 2019 What is Cloud Gaming? Unlike other gaming services that are based on the gamer’s computer device, cloud-based gaming relies on the host server. To use it, the player should install the companies programs, which can connect them to the server where the actual games are running.
At CES 2017, Nvidia announced its game streaming service for PCs and Mac: Geforce Now. Up until now, Nvidia has only allowed Shield owners to stream games from their PCs to their Shield. Expanding on the same idea, Nvidia is now bringing its cloud gaming service to Mac and PC as well.
Geforce Now will connect PCs and Macs to cloud data centers featuring GTX 1080s that will render games using Nvidia’s GameWorks technology and then stream them to PCs and Macs in HD resolution. Since the games will be streamed to PCs and Macs, they themselves don’t need to feature a powerful graphics card to run the games smoothly. Impressively, the service does not stream games directly from the cloud. Instead, users can launch any game from Steam, Origin, or UPlay on their PC, which would then be run on Nvidia’s servers and then streamed back to the PC.
Gamers simply download the GeForce NOW app to their local machine. With a few clicks, they can connect to their own GeForce GTX virtual PC, install their favorite games from popular digital game stores — like Steam, Battle.net, Origin, Uplay and GOG — and start playing. Free-to-play games like World of Tanks can also be installed directly from their respective websites.
Cloud Gaming On Mac
Geforce Now has been in development for five years now as per Nvidia, and the process to use it is relatively simple as users will only have to install the client and set it up. Nvidia will provide early access to the client in March for selected customers in the United States, with the full-fledged service launching in spring.
Instead of charging a flat monthly fee, Nvidia will be charging money on an hourly basis. Initially, signing up for Geforce Now will provide users with free play back of games on a GTX 1060 for 8 hours or up to 4 hours on a GTX 1080. Post that, users will have to pay $25 for 20 hours of gameplay on a GTX 1060 or 10 hours on a GTX 1080.
